Een uur in het donker voor Earth Hour

Het licht gaat uit en wel op 28 maart om 20:30 uur. Wereldwijd gaan steden, bedrijven, gebouwen en huishoudens een uur lang op zwart voor Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is een actie van het internationale Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF). Inmiddels zijn al meer dan 900 steden uit 80 verschillende landen van de partij. Zelfs in Parijs, ‘the city of light’, gaat het licht een uur lang uit. In Nederland geven Amsterdam en Rotterdam het goede voorbeeld. De verlichting van belangrijke gebouwen en bruggen gaat een uur uit.

De initiatiefnemers omschrijven Earth Hour als een verkiezing. De keus is alleen niet tussen presidentskandidaten, in deze verkiezingsstrijd stem je voor ‘de aarde’ of voor ‘global warming’. Stemmen is simpel. Doe je op 28 maart om 20:30 je lichten uit dan stem je voor de aarde. Doe je die niet, dan gaat jou stem naar ‘global warming’. Het Wereld Natuur Fonds hoopt dat een miljard mensen de lichten een uurtje uit doen. ‘Stem voor de aarde’, roept de organisatie op.

In 2007 werd Earth Hour voor het eerst georganiseerd, in Australië. Toen deden twee miljoen mensen mee. Vorig jaar waren dat er al vijftig miljoen. Niet alleen in huishoudens ging het licht uit, maar ook verschillende beroemde gebouwen vertoefden een uur in het donker. Zoals de Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco, het Colloseum in Rome en het Coca Cola billboard op Times Square. Dit jaar moet Earth Hour dubbel zo groot worden als vorig jaar. De initiatiefnemers gaan dit jaar voor een miljard deelnemers.

Dear people, I don’t understand what is all the fuss about this earth hour, for me it’s of no use. Don’t get me wrong I like the fact that people collaborate together for sustainability. But turning of the lights for one hour doesn’t help at all. It only saves money and not the environment. Now people use batteries and candles instead and those are not much better. It’s more effective if we would work that one hour and spend the money we made on a sustainable power production product and install it permanently. This can be a small solar panel or a wind generator, and this device will then produce electricity all the year and for many years to come. So if we collaborate together and create some large solar fields, we can! one day be without the need for a coal or nuclear power plant. Not even thinking about the new economy that we create. So for next time make it the “buying a sustainable power product day.” So that we can live via the (3p)² principal. = People Planet Profit Polluter Pays Principle: The principle that the polluter pays the costs of clearing the problems that are associated with the pollution that has been created for the next generation of people on this planet.
